Chaplain in Sterling Silver Mesh, End of the 19th Century

About the Item

Magnificent chaplain in solid silver mesh with two compartments. Its closure is straight, decorated with a frieze of acanthus leaves, it has a bail ring so that it can be hung on a chatelaine. Weight: 68.9grs Period: End of the 19th century. In perfect condition, no mesh is missing and is not discarded. From the 12th century to the 14th century, the chaplain has been an essential complement to daily clothing for both men and women. The oldest form of the chaplain is that of a small bag, with two cords (or loops) to close it, and another cord to open it and hang it from the belt by means of a stirrup. The caliper was closed by pulling on the two runners. The simple cord, attached at its ends to the upper edge of the bag, allowed it to be opened and passed through the metal stirrup. In the 12th century, the chaplains were often very rich, either by the material or by the work of embroidery. They were given as gifts to ladies. They were found in ordinary leather, Russian leather, morocco, velvet, plush. Later the chaplains were adorned with visible clasps, richly chiseled and adorned iron, silver and gold. These chaplains then also took the name of purses or game bags. Vintage but so chic!
