19th Century Continental European Sterling Silver Jack End Knife Rests, Set of 4

About the Item

A set of four sterling silver knife rests, with traditional cast Jack-style ends, circa mid-19th century, showing unidentified Continental European makers marks. The long, tapered and shaped center struts are supported by four point jacks at either end. Each strut shows an older initialed monogram beneath a five-point crown. Rather than balance a knife on the edge of a plate, these rests were placed to the right of each place setting to keep the knife from soiling the table linen. 3.75 in. L x 1.0 in. W x 1.0 in. H Weighing .55 ozt Showing a series of three makers marks, initials, a banner, and most likely the mark of the city of production. Excellent.

The oldest form of the chaplain is that of a small bag, with two cords (or loops) to close it, and another cord to open it and hang it from the belt by means of a stirrup. The caliper was closed by pulling on the two runners. The simple cord, attached at its ends to the upper edge of the bag, allowed it to be opened and passed through the metal stirrup. In the 12th century, the chaplains were often very rich, either by the material or by the work of embroidery. They were given as gifts to ladies. They were found in ordinary leather, Russian leather...
