A Pair of 19th Century Russian Judaica Silver Shabbat Sconces
About the Item
This exquisite pair of 19th-century Russian silver Shabbat sconces embodies both elegance and spiritual reverence, making them a rare and meaningful example of Judaica ceremonial art.
Each sconce features a petal-shaped tray, beautifully engraved with intricate foliate motifs along the wide, upper rims—an artistic flourish that enhances their ornamental appeal. The trays gently slope inward, forming multi-paneled inner basins with dome-like lower centers that curve gracefully upward to meet knopped baluster stems. This elegant transition leads to goblet-shaped candle holders, whose flared lips and gadroon-like paneling mirror the form and design language of the inner trays, creating a harmonious visual unity throughout the composition.
At the top of each handle is a bold, shell-formed ornament, adding a sculptural flourish that further elevates the artistry of the sconces. The handles themselves are formed with circular loops, allowing for easy wall mounting and lending the pieces a functional grace.
A deeply personal touch is found in the Hebrew dedication engraved on each goblet-shaped candle holder:
יוסף בן יעקב ז"ל
(“Yosef ben Yaakov, of blessed memory”), honoring the individual to whom these sconces were originally dedicated. This adds a layer of emotional and historical depth, linking the pieces to a specific individual and their family legacy.
Both sconces bear clear Russian silver hallmarks, including the "84" purity mark on the handles—indicating .875 silver content—as well as the maker’s mark, stamped on the outer panels of the candle holders, affirming their authenticity and fine craftsmanship.
Rich in cultural significance and artisanal beauty, these sconces are not only functional ritual items but also heirloom-quality works of Judaic art from Imperial Russia, reflecting the dignity and devotion of Shabbat observance in Jewish homes of the period.
