About the Item

A Historic Silver German-American Kiddush Goblet circa mid-19th century Seemingly this Kiddush Goblet has a most interesting backstory. While the cup hallmarks are clearly marked with "13" which testifies to the years and place it was made, this cup was only at the beginning of its long journey The cup was obviously purchased in Germany but was brought along by a family to the United States when they emigrated from Europe. After living in America for a number of years the father of the family passed on leaving behind his widowed wife and orphaned daughter. The silver cup was passed down to his daughter who thought of the best way to preserve her father's memory, by donating the kiddush cup to her synagogue so it could be used for years to come whenever they made the blessing of wine there. The dedication at the front written in English reads "Presented to Oheb Shalom by Mrs. E Cohn, In Memory of her father Simon Emrich, 1843-1939" on a cartouche surrounded by a belt buckle motif. Kiddush cup has engraved undulating scrolling designs adorning its main body, and elegant pockmarked scrolling along its lower dome stepped base.
