About the Item

A Silver Mezuzah Case from Israel in the second half of the 20th century is a testament to the revival of Jewish craftsmanship and artistic expression during this period. Israel, established in 1948, became a hub for Jewish artisans from diverse cultural backgrounds, each contributing their traditions to the burgeoning field of Judaica. In the post-1948 era, Israeli silversmiths and artists drew inspiration from both ancient Jewish motifs and contemporary design trends. Mezuzah cases, traditionally affixed to doorposts in Jewish homes, contain parchment scrolls inscribed with verses from the Torah. Silver, revered for its purity and durability, was a favored material for such cases, symbolizing the sanctity of the text it protects. This Mezuzah case features a blend of traditional and biblical elements—such as the Hebrew lettering of G-d's name on the front of the case with applied floral designs. Tablets of the law, flanked by two rampant lions and a hovering Torah crown adorn the top of the case. Two Solomonic columns frame the front of the case with floral and foliate motifs at their heads and bases. At the bottom are some elegant floral chased designs.
