About the Item

Solid silver writing set, Madrid, Juan Sellán (DOC. 1820s - circa 1886), Spain, 1845. With hallmarks. Writing set with four inkwells consists of a rectangular tray straight corners, decorated at the bottom with a drag strip bows and flowers. Each of the containers has a decorated stand with fine architectural elements classicists in relief, and has a vase-shaped tubular body, and two masks at the sides, and a garland of volutes and venerates topping tops thereof ( two of which are to support puffs feathers and two not). In the centre of the tray, bird inn is sheltered under a bandstand pointed arches decorated with scrolls, topped with a base that supports the bell feature. Hallmarks show the creation of the set in Madrid, and provide both the date (1845) as the teacher responsible. Juan Sellán was a natural silversmith Madrid, with extensive documentation on their marriages, children, etc. in the Parish of San Sebastian in this city. He married in 1823 and his paternal grandfather, with whom he shared name, was a native of Sierph (France), while his maternal grandfather was a native of New Valencia de Indias. It is known mainly active during the second third of the 19th century, and was one of the main figures of the romantic silverware Madrid, although he also did some work in a similar to the last stage of the Royal Factory "Platerías Martinez" style (in the who trained and worked to pass the exam master in 1831). He applied for joining the guild of silversmiths in 1842. They retain his work numerous private collections, besides institutions like the National Museum of Decorative Arts of the Spanish capital, the History Museum, the Parish of San Sebastian, the Church of Santa María del Castillo Perales de Tajuña, the Parish of San Pedro de Siguenza, etc. Weight 2450 grams.
