About the Item
This exquisite antique French lidded bowl is a superb example of early 20th-century decorative art. The piece features a stunning hand-cut crystal bowl with a ribbed and paneled design, seated in a finely detailed solid silver frame. The intricate silver work includes ornate handles with scrolling acanthus leaf motifs, a decorative footed base, and a beautifully chased rim around the crystal.
The lid is also crafted from solid silver, with a stylized flower finial that serves as a delicate handle. The silver components bear the French Minerva 1 hallmark, indicating that the piece is made of 950 purity silver, a higher standard than Sterling. This hallmark was in use from 1838 to 1919, dating this elegant bowl to the Belle Époque or earlier. The clear, precise hand-cut crystal catches the light beautifully, creating a brilliant contrast with the rich, patinaed silver.
This versatile piece would have been used as a sugar bowl, a bonbon dish, or a serving bowl for other delicacies. Its timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship make it a perfect addition to any collection of fine silver or a sophisticated decorative item for a dining room or curio cabinet.
