About the Item
This beautiful crystal urn with a sterling silver lid manufactured by the Hawkes Glass Company.
Based in Corning, NY, T.G. Hawkes & Co. (c.1880-1959) was established by Thomas Gibbons Hawkes (1846-1913). Born in Ireland, Hawkes immigrated to Brooklyn in 1862, then moved to Corning, opening his own cut glass firm in 1880. His firm, T.G. Hawkes & Co., soon became famous for quality wares. Hawkes' glassware was used in the White House from 1885 until 1938. Hawkes pieces can be found in museums world-wide.
While the sterling silver lid is sleek and has no decorative design, the glass has acid-etched flowers and leaves all around the top, center as well as base. What the silver lid “lacks” the crystal urn makes up. A beautiful piece, empty or filled on an end table, powder room, bookshelf or and other area that needs to be dressed up.
