Sterling Silver Edwardian Epergne with Floral Trumpet Vases, J. Gloster, 1910

About the Item

Characteristic of the centrepieces known as Epergnes, this medium-sized Sterling Silver Edwardian example is designed to display flowers in its blooming-lipped central trumpet vase and and three smaller radiating branches. The central stem is fixed, while the lower flutes, with their matching floral form, are removable and adjustable so that flowers may be placed in different arrangements. The weighted base is hallmarked to 1910 and the workshop of Joseph Gloster Ltd. in Birmingham, with a further small spiral mark attributing it to one of the Journeyman silversmiths working there. With the influence of the earlier Arts and Crafts movement in its complementary natural forms, this is an elegant and usable piece of Edwardian design.
