Sterling Silver Art Deco Platter with Bramble Motif, Mappin & Webb, 1938

About the Item

With an engraved motif of Bramble twining across one corner of this pleasingly weighted solid Sterling Silver centrepiece platter, offset by falling leaves opposite, this simple and decorative shallow dish perfectly captures the changes in tastes and styles towards the end of the Art Deco era. Made in 1938 at the Sheffield workshop of Mappin & Webb, the form is that of a ‘Tazza’ with its wide, low base elevating the piece slightly, modestly curved and stepped for a reduced Art Deco effect. Above this, the dish is gently rounded and cusped inwards at the corners, traced with a raised, moulded lip. Delicately outlined and unstylised, the flowers and late-fruiting blackberries of the Bramble, across from falling leaves, are the perfect engraved motifs; timelessly illustrative of changing seasons and ideal for a piece at the historical juncture of shifting and enduring styles in British design.
