Sterling Silver Hebraic Cutout and Acrylic Passover Compendium & Dishes

About the Item

A remarkable example of mid-20th-century Israeli Judaica design, this modernist Passover compendium from the 1950s combines traditional symbolism with sleek, architectural aesthetics in sterling silver and thick acrylic. The piece is square in form, with two sides constructed from polished sterling silver featuring evenly spaced horizontal planes, which frame and support three clear acrylic tiered inserts—each functioning as a separate compartment for the traditional three Matzot placed during the Passover Seder. These represent the Kohen, Levi, and Yisrael castes, an integral part of the Haggadah’s structure. The opposing two silver walls of the compendium are entirely cut through with the full Hebrew text of the Ha Lachma Anya passage, masterfully laser- or hand-cut across the three tiers. Each row contains a single line of the text, rendered in an elegant Assyrian-style block script (Ktav Ashuri). The interplay of light and shadow through the cutouts brings a poetic element to the structure, emphasizing the sacred words and making them an architectural feature. Resting atop the compendium are six circular sterling silver dishes, each fitting snugly into recessed round openings cut into the top acrylic layer. Each dish features one of the traditional Seder items—Zeroa, Maror, Charoset, Karpas, Chazeret, and Beitzah—embossed in Hebrew at the center. The bowls are beautifully flared outward at the rims, echoing the radiating shape of a blossoming flower or flame. This compendium is a striking blend of ritual functionality and postwar Israeli design innovation, balancing modern materials with deep-rooted tradition. Hallmarked Silver weight 17.7 ozt
