Aluminia Royal Copenhagen Set of 5 Tranquebar Cups and Saucers, 1914-1969

About the Item

Vintage set of 5 cups and 5 saucers features the main motif of a tulip framed by a braided pattern in blue colors. The braided rims of both cups and saucers are done in relief, adding texture to otherwise minimally shaped pieces. The cups and saucers are signed on the bottoms with the old beehive mark, used until 1969, the model numbers (11/957), and the decorator's initials; the cups are marked with model numbers impressed underglaze, and the saucers - with model signs impressed underglaze. The marks allow us to date the sets to 1914 - 1969. The Tranquebar service was created in 1914 by Christian Joachim for Aluminia. In 1969 the Aluminia name was changed to Royal Copenhagen Denmark, and the beehive backmark was changed to three wavy lines and the word Fajance (Faience). The Royal Copenhagen factory was founded in 1775 by Queen Juliane Marie; in 1882 it was purchased by the faience factory Aluminia. From 1913 Aluminia was also called Copenhagen Faience factory , but this name was not used in the product marking until 1921. In 1901 the painter Joakim Petersen (1870-1943) joined the company; he changed his name to Christian Joakim in 1911. Joakim was noted for his ceramic experiments at The World Fair in Paris in 1900; he created a new, unique style of faience for Aluminia. Joakim designed several new dinner services, such as Krone and White Clover, with Tranquebar, named after the old Danish colony in India, being one of the most successful services of Aluminia and Royal Copenhagen.
