Antique Baroque Revival Sterling Flatware Service for 18

About the Item

Circa 1850-1870s, .812 Fineness solid Silver, Germany. This Baroque revival silver service for 18 is perfect for casual and formal entertainment in any décor. The asymmetric swagged motif with its shell terminus has an elegant sleek look. The large European size and heavier weight is pleasing to the hand and the quality of the pieces is superb. It is rare to find complete early flatware sets that include original knives. The complex monogram includes a Baron's coronet indicating the service was once part of a noble household. Marked in the old Germanic system of loths, this set is hallmarked 13 for 13 loths, a silver purity that was the highest made at that time in the Germanic sphere of influence (similar to sterling). This set consists of 18 each of the following: dinner fork, dinner knife, smaller knife, smaller fork (perfect for salad), table spoon, dessert spoon. Tea spoons did not exist in continental sets at this time. Noted: the knives were re-bladed in the 20th century. Remarks by Lawrence Jeffrey: "A noble service, perfect for a democratized American table!" WEIGHT: 171.39 ozt weighable solid silver does not include knives. Estimate for knives 42ozt for an approximate total of 217.39ozt of solid silver.
