"Flying Phoenix, " Unique Set of Art Deco Plates & Bowls, Lemon Yellow & Silver

About the Item

Entirely unique and vividly glazed in tones of lemon yellow, silver and white, this set of 21 Art Deco dishes includes a very unusual large bowl, 10 dinner plates and 10 dessert plates. Each piece features a central, flying phoenix, grandly fitted out in flashy plumage, finished in a mirrored silver glaze. The ground of each piece is finished in a lovely yellow glaze that was highly unusual for the artist, Waylande Gregory. The artist was prodigious and indefatigable over a long career, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. One remarkable example is a fountain sculpture -- "Light Dispelling Darkness" -- in Roosevelt Park in Edison, New Jersey, which has recently been restored. The bowl is 11 inches in diameter and 4.25 inches high; the dinner plates are 10.5 inches and the dessert plates are 7.25 inches in diameter. (Dimensions listed below are for dinner plates.)
