About the Item
A Very Fine & Rare George II Kitchen Pepper Made in London in 1731 by Samuel Laundy & Jeffrey Griffith.
The Pepper stands on a circular, stepped, spreading foot and the cylindrical body is plain in design. The upper section displays a plain horizontal girdle. The pull-off cover displays a domed top and is pierced with scrolls and a central flower head motif. This piece has an "S" scroll handle and the base displays a very crisp set of hallmarks. The pepper is in excellent condition and has a good colour.
Although termed Kitchen Peppers, these were almost certainly used in the dining room alongside a cruet frame.
The work of Laundy and Griffith is extremely rare, with them working from premises in Staining Lane, London. Laundy was of Huguenot descent, which would account for the quality of the piece.
