About the Item

Large Imperial Porcelain Alexander II period plate Russian, mid-19th Century Height 24cm, width 24cm, depth 3.5cm This impressive 19th-century plate is an artefact of Russian Imperial history. Of circular form with a cream ground predominating, the centre is painted with the star of the Imperial Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky, an order of chivalry of the Russian Empire awarding citizens for political or military service. Set within the central star is the motto of the order ‘For Labour and Fatherland’, as well as the imperial cypher of Alexander II. The circumference of the plate is adorned with a red sash design, which culminates in the cross of the order at the bottom of the plate. The scalloped edge of the plate is gilded. On the reverse, a maker’s mark and a series of red inventory numbers can be seen, corresponding to the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg, Russia. With its interesting history, this plate would be sure to add a touch of imperial elegance to any table.
