Pair of Early 19th Century Blue Opaline Bowls by Desvignes

About the Item

A pair of blue opaline bowls decorated with a frieze of daisies and forget-me painted in dark blue, ocher and gold, and golden nets. The simplicity and subtlety of this pattern is representative of the production of Jean-Baptiste Desvignes, the most famous decorator of opalines under the French Restoration. Jean-Baptiste Desvignes found a way to paint on opaline crystal and glass. He used only vegetable-based colors that he affixed to the opaline crystal. The tones, always matte, were limited to dark blue and red. The gilding dominated, using forms of linear palmettes, flowers, and garland patterns.
