Antique Porcelain Tea Cup Coffee Cup & Saucer Trio First Period Worcester C-1770

About the Item

This First Period Worcester Porcelain trio set consists of a teacup, coffee cup, and saucer finely hand painted in the “Spotted Fruit” pattern circa 1770. Painted by James Giles, the decoration features fruit and several flying insects within a gilt-edged cartouche framed by an apple-green ground. The spotted fruit is quince. It is bunched together with red cherries, blackcurrants, plums, and green leaves. Both the teacup and coffee cup show three insects flying near the fruit (see images). The decoration has the same quatrefoil shape and apple-green ground as the “Marchioness of Huntley” Worcester pattern. Dimensions: Saucer diameter 5.15″, Teacup 1.75″ tall x 3.25″ diameter, coffee cup 2.75″ tall 2.25″ diameter Condition: Excellent, with two insignificant spots under the original glaze on the top edge of the teacup (see images). Marks: Underglaze Worcester mock Meissen blue mark, with “6” above a set of crossed swords. This mark was in use at Worcester from 1760 to 1770. Price: $780 The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain, Volume 1, 1751-1851, attributes this pattern to the distinctive style of Worcester fruit painting by the eminent James Giles (see image on page 175).
