Chinese Export Cup and Saucer, London Decorated Qianlong, 1760-1780

About the Item

This is a beautiful coffee cup and saucer made in China and then decorated in London. It dates from the Qianlong period, between circa 1760 and 1780. The items are potted in sturdy greyish porcelain, the surface slightly ribbed and with a characteristic cup handle. The decoration was applied in one of the London decoration studios, which specialized at copying the Chinese style decorations at the time. The set is in the "Famille Rose" style, with a pink-tinted rim around the saucer and the inside of the cup. Both cup and saucer have a wonderful family scene of a couple, their child and a servant. Husband and wife seem to be discussing the landscape behind them, with boats and a town on the opposite side of the river, high mountains behind them. The servant is stood in front of a beautiful pavilion, a tea tray in her hands. The items are not marked, but there are old collectors' labels on the underside of the saucer, which have been left. Condition report: The set is in excellent antique condition with some wear as visible in the pictures, and one surface chip/pockmark on the cup, visible on the blue sleeve of the gentleman. This is the only form of damage; otherwise the set is in excellent condition. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Everything was handwork and kilns were fired on wood or coal, creating a lot of dust and other particles that could get baked into the porcelain by accident. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the time of production. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Dimensions: Cup 5.7cm (2.25") diameter and 6.5cm (2.4") high, saucer 13.8cm (5.9") diameter.
