About the Item

This is a very stunning tea and coffee service made by the Crown Derby Porcelain Company some time between 1806 and 1825 - judging from the colour and feel of the porcelain, most likely around 1810. The service consists of a teapot with stand, a lidded sucrier, a milk jug, five teacups and saucers, two coffee cans and saucers, a slop bowl and two large deep plates. The service was made by the Crown Derby Porcelain Company, later called Royal Crown Derby and currently the oldest British porcelain factory still in production. Crown Derby was one of the most prominent potteries right from the start of English porcelain production in the mid-1700s to today. Their items are of exceptionally high quality and many of the designs have become iconic, particularly the Imari designs; many of these are still being made today. The marking at the bottom of the items indicates that the service was produced some time between 1806 and 1825. It is quite rare to find a whole service in good condition, and the most difficult to find is a teapot without any damage. This is such a service, and although there are some faults to other items, the teapot is in perfect condition. The pattern of this service is a beautiful Imari pattern called "Japan". It depicts a garden with lush vegetation and the typical fences, painted freely from the hand in red, bright green, cobalt blue and gilt. This pattern has become iconic and has been re-made in many different versions for many years. This early original version has a beautiful spontaneous and bright quality. This set would be fabulous both for display and for (careful) use. The porcelain looks like it is from the early years of bone china; it is a bit greyish and has blemishes, pointing to an early date when kilns were still imprecise and the recipe of the porcelain not perfected. Condition report This set is in excellent condition with only a few faults. The pattern and the gilt is generally in good condition, with some scratches and light rubbing here and there. Most of the porcelain is still white although some items have yellowed on the inside, which is visible on the pictures if you look well. The teapot is perfect; the teapot Stand has a break that has been professionally repaired and you can't see this at all when in position. The lidded sucrier is in perfect condition. The milk jug handle has been broken and was reattached neatly; it also has some stress marks on the inside of the mouth, which occurred during firing and are quite common for items of this period. The slop bowl is perfect. Two of the teacups have slight production marks coming off the rim. Some of the cups have yellowed a bit on the inside. Some items still ring clearly when tapped, while others sound more dull, although this early china does not craze visibly there must be a process of crazing that is invisible with the naked eye. None of the saucers or plates are cracked, and there are no chips on any of the items. Overall the whole set looks stunning and is good for use. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s and early 1900s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Dimensions: Teapot measures 29.5cm (11 3/4") from handle to spout and stands 15cm (6") high incl. finial; sucrier measures 17cm (6 3/4") between the handles and stands 15cm (6") high incl. finial; milk jug measures 15cm (6") from handle to mouth and stands 13.5cm (5 1/4") high; teacup 8.2cm (3 1/4") diameter; coffee cup 6.4cm (2.5") diameter; saucer 14cm (5.5") diameter; cake plate 21cm (8 1/4") diameter.

Royal Crown Derby Porcelain

Founded in 1750 by Andrew Planche and William Duesbury in Derby, England, the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company is one of the oldest original English manufacturers of fine bone china. Dating to the Georgian era, it has operated for more than 265 years.

In 1761, the company, then called Derby Porcelain, created its first commemorative piece for the coronation of King George III. In 1775, King George III recognized the uniqueness and high quality of Derby Porcelain, giving the company the honor of using a crown on its back stamp. Queen Victoria gave further honors to the porcelain manufacturer in 1890, when she awarded the company a royal warrant and bestowed upon it the title of “The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company.”

In the years following the first royal appointment, the company employed some of its finest artistic creators, such as watercolor landscape painter Zachariah Boreman; flower painters William Billingsley, William Pegg and Walter Withers; and figure painters Richard Askew and James Banford. The company produced the most sought-after collectible pieces in its history under the direction of William Duesbury II. He died at 34 and his full vision for the company went unrealized; it subsequently entered a period of decline.

In 1811, Robert Bloor revived the company by employing excellent painters and producing exquisite serving pieces that featured the Japanese Imari style of bold colors and lavish details. The popular design continues to be produced today. Modern pieces such as the paperweight collection also remain in demand more than 40 years after their introduction.

Under the creative control of different partners over time, the company has had three main locations. Its current base of operations is in Derby, where it continues to produce fine ceramics and decorative collectibles.

This is a beautiful orphaned teacup made by Spode in about 1810. It bears a lavish Japanese-inspired Imari pattern. Spode was the great pioneer among the Georgian potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by British potters ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china, which had come to an end around that time, with their own designs. This was fundamental to a thriving industry that would last for about 150 years and provide half the world with their tableware. Spode porcelain is regarded as one of the highest quality porcelains around; for a soft-paste porcelain it is surprisingly hard and fine, and has a wonderful bright white colour. The pattern on this can is called "Dollar" pattern, a very famous pattern that was used by English potters in the 18th and early 19th Century. It is obvious why it is called “dollar” - but its origin is less obvious! It is thought that this pattern was derived from a very old Chinese pattern depicting a tree with elaborate foliage that hides a Chinese character representing longevity or happiness.
