Gorham Martele Tea / Coffee Set Tray Sterling Silver 1898
About the Item
A fine circa 1898 martele six (6) piece tea/coffee set with circa 1897 tray by Gorham, of Providence, RI, each hollowware piece chased in a generous motif of leaves and huckleberries; the tray has the same motif and also includes engraving. To make and chase the 6 piece tea/coffee set was 635 hours; the superb tray 145 hours.
Total weight including tray 342 oz. Dimensions: teapot 10 inches across spout and handle by 7 1/2 inches high; creamer 5 1/4 inches across handle and spout by 5 1/2 inches high; waste bowl 5 1/2 inches diameter by 4 inches high; sugar bowl with cover 8 inches across handles by 6 1/2 inches high; coffee pot 9 1/2 inches across handle and spout by 9 1/2 inches high; kettle on stand with burner 9 1/2 inches across spout and body of pot; tray 25 1/2 inches across handles by 18 inches wide by 3 inch elevated rim. Elaborate 'MHR' monogram on underside of each piece and at center of tray.
Marked as illustrated in photos; each hollowware piece with 135 in oval rectangle; the tray with 9305 in oval rectangle.
[In the first years of Martele (which means 'hammered' in French), Gorham often made Martele pieces on the sterling standard (925 parts silver per thousand.] The tray, which is martele, was made on the sterling standard especially to give it strength in holding such a heavy six (6) piece tea/coffee set.
