About the Item

Direct from Paris, a stunning 4pc. antique French 950 sterling silver Louis XVI tea set by France’s premier silversmith “Puiforcat”, currently owned by Hermes, in like new condition with a Tetard Freres sterling silver serving tray – circa 1890s. Puiforcat, an illustrious name in the world of fine silverware, has been synonymous with exquisite craftsmanship and unparalleled quality for nearly two centuries. Renowned for their impeccable designs and superior artistry, Puiforcat has not only adorned the tables of royalty but also established itself as a symbol of luxury and refinement. Founded in 1820 by Émile Puiforcat, the Maison Puiforcat quickly distinguished itself in the competitive world of silverware. The workshop, based in Paris, was dedicated to producing pieces that combined functionality with artistic beauty. The hallmark of Puiforcat's craftsmanship lies in its meticulous attention to detail and the use of traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations. The artisans at Puiforcat are not just silversmiths; they are artists. Each piece is a testament to the mastery of techniques such as chasing, engraving, and gilding. The process begins with the selection of the finest materials, followed by the creation of a model, usually sculpted in wax or clay. This model serves as the blueprint for the final piece. The silver is then carefully shaped, polished, and adorned with intricate designs that often reflect historical styles or innovative contemporary aesthetics. Puiforcat's dedication to excellence has earned it numerous awards and accolades over the years. The company's participation in various international exhibitions and fairs, such as the Exposition Universelle in Paris, brought it widespread acclaim. These events showcased Puiforcat's ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde design, earning it medals and recognition from critics and patrons alike. The prestige of Puiforcat is further elevated by its history of royal patronage. Throughout its history, the company has been commissioned to create pieces for various royal households and dignitaries. These commissions are not only a testament to Puiforcat's superior quality but also to its ability to cater to the tastes and demands of the most discerning clients. One notable example is the service commissioned by King Alfonso XIII of Spain. The elaborate designs and meticulous execution of these pieces reflect the grandeur and opulence expected by royalty. Similarly, Puiforcat has created bespoke items for other European monarchs and aristocrats, each piece embodying the elegance and sophistication associated with the brand. In 1993, Puiforcat became part of the prestigious Hermès Group, a move that further cemented its status as a paragon of luxury. This association brought together two brands that share a commitment to craftsmanship, quality, and timeless elegance. Under the Hermès umbrella, Puiforcat has continued to thrive, benefiting from the group's extensive resources and global reach. The partnership with Hermès has allowed Puiforcat to expand its offerings while staying true to its heritage. The collaboration has resulted in innovative collections that marry the traditional techniques of silversmithing with contemporary design sensibilities. This synergy has not only enhanced Puiforcat's reputation but also ensured its relevance in the modern luxury market. Among the many exquisite products that Puiforcat is known for, the 950 sterling silver tea sets stand out as exemplars of the brand's dedication to perfection. These tea sets are not merely functional items; they are works of art that elevate the ritual of tea drinking to an extraordinary experience. Each tea set is crafted from 950 sterling silver, a higher standard than the more common 925 sterling silver, which indicates a higher percentage of pure silver in the alloy. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the tea sets but also ensures their durability and value. The creation of a Puiforcat tea set involves hundreds of hours of labor, with each component meticulously crafted and assembled by hand. The design of Puiforcat tea sets often draws inspiration from various historical periods, from the opulence of the Louis XVI style to the sleek lines of Art Deco. However, regardless of the design, each piece is characterized by its harmonious proportions, balanced forms, and intricate detailing. The handles, spouts, and lids are carefully designed for both beauty and functionality, ensuring a perfect pour and comfortable grip. One of the most iconic Puiforcat tea sets is the Normandie collection, designed in the 1930s for the first-class passengers of the SS Normandie, a French ocean liner. This set, with its streamlined design and geometric patterns, is a perfect example of Puiforcat's ability to blend elegance with modernity. The Normandie tea set remains a coveted piece for collectors and connoisseurs, symbolizing the pinnacle of Puiforcat's craftsmanship. The legacy of Puiforcat is a testament to the enduring appeal of superior craftsmanship and timeless design. From its humble beginnings in a Parisian workshop to its current status as a symbol of luxury under the Hermès Group, Puiforcat has consistently set the standard for excellence in silverware. The numerous awards and accolades, royal patronage, and the exquisite 950 sterling silver tea sets all highlight the brand's commitment to quality and artistry. Puiforcat's journey is not just a story of a silversmith; it is a celebration of the art of living, where every piece crafted is a reflection of beauty, heritage, and unparalleled skill.
