Queen Victoria’s Silver Coffee Service by William Bateman & Daniel Ball

About the Item

Queen Victoria’s silver coffee service, by William Bateman & Daniel Ball, comprising a coffee pot and burner, a cream jug and a sugar basin, each of lobed hexagonal form, with delicate floral engraving, the interior of the sugar basin gilded, the coffee pot, burner and cream jug engraved with the personal cypher of Queen Victoria within the motto of the Order of the Garter and surmounted by a crown, all contained in the original fitted wooden case by the royal goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge & Company. English, 1839. Provenance: Margaret Julia Davys 1839. Footnote: William Bateman and Daniel Ball were suppliers to Rundell, Bridge & Co. This silver coffee service was made for Queen Victoria early her reign. A similar silver tea service by the same makers engraved with the royal cypher is in the Royal Collection [see Royal Collections Trust, RCIN 47102]. Queen Victoria gifted the service to Margaret Julia Davys, daughter of the queen’s former tutor Rev. George Davys, on her marriage in November 1839.

    The enamelling on this quatrefoil gold pendant is attributed to Ray & Montague: ‘hiltmakers, goldworkers and enamellers’. The obverse is mounted with a vitreous paste profile portrait cameo of Admiral Viscount Nelson within four navy blue enamel panels with the gilt inscription: ‘H·Nelson·Died·for His·Country at·Trafalgar Oct:21·1805’ all within ropework borders. The reverse is mounted with an oval polychrome enamel plaque representing a blue Royal Navy ensign flying triumphant above the flags of France and Spain superimposed with an anchor and laurel wreath against a red background within four navy blue enamel panels with the gilt inscription: Glory to the Souls of the Brave, a line from The Battle of the Baltic written in 1801 by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) to commemorate Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Copenhagen.     A Measham – Bargeware Tea Kettle impressed with the Blue Ribbon Temperance motto, England, circa 1880. The Blue Ribbon Movement was active from 1880-1882 in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States. The ribbon badge was worn by those who took the pledge of abstinence from alcohol consumption, adopting the term teetotaler. The kettle has a dark brown treacle glaze with enameled, raised and molded floral and fruit applications. The main panel, seen on both sides of the kettle reads, “Sign the Pledge, Don the Blue” The notched lid is held securely in place for pouring. Measham Ware was decorated with floret appliqués and an impressed panel or banner personalized using a printer’s typeface. The pottery, also known as Rockingham or Motto Ware, was produced from the 1870’s by William Mason, a South Derbyshire potter.
