Ridgway hand painted and gilded sucrier on stand
About the Item
This hand painted and gilded porcelain sucrier on stand is by John and William Ridgway. Each of the almost Paisley shaped gilt edged cartouches on the lid, the side and the stand contain sprays of various flowers, and these cartouches are surrounded by a cobalt blue ground and extensive gilding. This sucrier would have been part of an expensive tea set at the time as cobalt blue and the gilding were costly to purchase. The stand has a diameter of 190 mm (7.5 inches) and stands 20 mm (.75 of an inch) high. The sucrier measures 170 mm (6.75 inches) in diameter and stands 120 mm (4.75 inches) high to the top of the lid. Neither piece carries a makers mark, which isn't unusual for early Ridgway, but the pattern number 2/1041 is written in red on both bases. A photo of the sucrier shape can be see on pages 95 and 113 of Geoffrey Godden's "Ridgway Porcelains" 1985 edition. There is some minor rubbing to the gilding on both pieces and some light crazing to the sucrier. It would date from around 1820.
