A rare and complete ceramic tea set by Robert Picault, the celebrated French ceramist whose work helped define the Vallauris pottery movement of the mid-20th century. Working alongside Picasso, Picault developed a highly distinctive style, characterized by earthy green, brown, and white glazes enlivened with geometric and folkloric motifs.
This set includes a teapot with lid, six cups, and six matching saucers, all bearing Picault’s hallmark decoration. Spirals, grids, and triangular bands are painted with rhythmic precision, combining functional form with decorative vibrancy. The underside of the cups is signed with Picault’s “RP” monogram, underscoring authenticity.
Produced during the 1950s—the peak of his career—this tea set embodies the joyful spirit of postwar creativity on the French Riviera, where utilitarian objects were elevated into works of art. Today, Picault’s ceramics are highly collectible for their charm, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal, making this set a striking addition to both use and display.

Robert Picault
Robert Picault was born in Paris. After studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris at the end of World War Two. Here, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later, he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas in the village. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbour to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the 1950s. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and the bulk of his work is characterized by green and brown geometric motifs consisting of noughts and crosses, bands and waves.
