About the Item

This exquisite lidded vegetable dish, also known as a tureen or serving dish, was crafted by the renowned Minton’s pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, England, during the late 19th century. The piece is part of the “Montrose” pattern, a sought-after design that features delicate floral and geometric motifs in deep red transferware on a classic white ceramic background. This motif is characteristic of the Victorian era, reflecting elegance and sophistication. The dish is marked with Minton’s official backstamp and bears the registration number “93699,” which confirms its authenticity and dating to circa 1880-1890. Its elegant scalloped edges, decorative handles, and beautifully detailed lid with a raised finial showcase the exceptional craftsmanship Minton is known for. While this piece has minor signs of wear and some age-related imperfections, such as a small hairline crack visible in the bowl, these elements do not detract from its overall charm and historical value. The dish remains a versatile piece that can serve as a centerpiece, a functional serving item, or a collector’s display. This piece is perfect for collectors of English ceramics, enthusiasts of Victorian décor, or anyone seeking to add a touch of timeless refinement to their table or collection.

By Mason's Ironstone
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a superb Ironstone Sauce Tureen, complete with lid , made by Mason's of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the early part of the 19th century, circa 1820. This tureen is well potted and is hexagonal in shape with moulded animal head handles to the base and a flower head knob to the lid. This particular piece is the gilded version of the pattern and has heavily applied hand gilded highlights. Tureens of the same shape and period are illustrated on Pages 145 and 155 of Godden's Guide to Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares published by the Antique Collectors' Club. The pattern is beautifully hand painted over a printed pattern with bold enamels of Cobalt Blue, burnt orange, green, puce all in various shades with much additional hand gilding. The pieces are unmarked as was often the case if the item had formed part of a large dinner or desert service...
