About the Item

Circa early 20th C, New York, from Duparquet, 110 W 22nd St, an enormous and heavy (40lbs) copper stock pot with two wrought iron handles and a fitted lid with a top wrought iron handle. The Duparquet stamp is evident on two sides of the pot and on the lid. In addition, the initials JPM are stamped underneath one of the Duparquet stamps. An owner’s stamp suggests that someone valued the pot enough to claim it as theirs. Both the lid and the pot have the letter M stamped on them. A single number or letter is usually a reference to match the pan to its lid, and perhaps also to its spot on the shelf of a busy kitchen. The pot is beautifully made and shows all the hallmarks of superb craftsmanship. Cramp seams are evident on the side and base of the pot. In a cramp seam, the notches (called crenellations, like the top of a medieval castle wall) cut into one piece of copper slide over the edge of the other piece along the entire length of the seam and are pounded — cramped — together until they fuse into a single layer. The smith then lets molten brass flow into the crevices along the seam to seal it, a process called brazing. (Brass and copper readily bond to each other, so the filler brass helps to strengthen the join across the layers of copper.) A well-executed brazed cramp seam with copper and brass is a strong and long-lasting join. The rivets on the handles are sturdy and consistent with the overall quality of the pot. Refinished and polished this would be a spectacular statement piece. As it is, it would make for a gorgeous and highly functional log holder. Duparquet, Huot & Moneuse was an American kitchen equipment manufacturer that was founded in 1852. Early in its existence, its address was 43 & 45 Wooster Street in New York City and subsequently, as Duparquet, was located at 110 W 22nd St.. It had a factory in SoHo, sales offices in Boston, Chicago, and the U.S. capital. The company specialized in commercial stoves, which were sold to passenger ships, hospitals and prestigious restaurants and the very wealthy. It also sold paraphernalia such as knives, pans, sieves and all kinds of kitchen utensils. By 1907, it proclaimed itself a manufacturer of "Imperial French Ranges and High Grade Cooking Apparatus", as well as a general kitchen outfitter. The company went bankrupt in 1936 a new concern re-registered the trademark in 2008. Dimensions: Pot: 21" diameter, 11.5"h, 24.5"w including handles, pot wall is 3mm thick. Lid" 21"diameter, 3.5"h including handle Condition: Good. Both the lid and the pot are in excellent condition. The heavy gauge has kept the original pot and lid shapes.

An antique sauté pan, marked Duparquet, Huot & Moneuse Co., and an excellent example of high-quality American-made copper cookware. This copper sauté pan has a polished copper exterior and a tinned interior. It has a wrought iron handle, riveted to the body with copper rivets. The handle bears a natural patina of age, showing the typical craftsmanship found in older, high-quality copper cookware. The stamp on the side of the pan reads "D.H.& M.Co. N.Y. 43-45 Wooster St.". A 1909 catalogue with the 43-45 Wooster St. business address shows an example of this pan and indicates it came in sizes from 5"-20"diameter. Late 19th/Early 20th c., large Japanese Meiji bronze floor urn. The principal decoration on both sides of the vase is rendered in beautiful and strong relief. One side depicts birds, possibly skylarks, in flight and on flowering cherry blossom branches. The opposite side depicts herons wading and alighting on a flowering tree. the upper and lower portions of urn are decorated with repeating arched lozenges detailed with scrolls and flora. 20th c., a pair of Japanese Kutani style porcelain lidded jars, stamped on Porcelaine de Paris underside of foot. The mark indicates the piece was produced in the 1970's. The jars are decorated in deep orange, tangerine and gold motifs on a white background. On one side, both jars have matching decoration depicting a scroll showing a pastoral scene. On the other side, each jar has a seperate floral depiction; one including bamboo. Both are highly decorative. Founded 1773 by Jean-Baptiste Locre, Porcelaine de Paris, was one of the first manufactures to use the Chinese secret of porcelain. It immediately aimed for the luxury trade, selling to the Royal Courts of Europe. After surviving the French Revolution, Porcelaine de Paris steadily produced tableware as well as purely decorative pieces, receiving orders from all over Europe.
