Ford & Tupper 1871 Sterling Silver Stag Tureen with Deer Animal Motifs

About the Item

Ford & Tupper sterling silver tureen or covered bowl from 1871 with highly detailed and realistic deer motifs adorning the sides and cover of the tureen. It measures 11'' in height with the lid (6 1/4'' without) by 14'' from handle to handle by 8 3/8'' in depth, weighs 48 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks and monograms as shown. Ford & Tupper was a New York-based silversmith, successor to Ford Tupper & Behan, active between 1867 and 1874. Please feel free to ask us any questions, and please see our other listings.     An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique George III English sterling silver sauce tureens with ladles; an addition to our Georgian silverware collection. These exceptional antique George III sterling silver sauce tureens have a plain rectangular rounded form. The body of each tureen is plain and embellished with an applied gadroon decorated border to the lower portion and upper rim. These impressive silver tureens retain the original hallmarked push fit covers ornamented with further applied gadroon decoration to the upper plateau in addition to the base of the impressive reed decorated handle enveloped with leaf designs to the terminals. The surface of each cover is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting a falcon holding a partridge between her feet and encompassed with the belted motto 'Qui potest capere capiat', Let him who can take, take. Each Georgian tureen is fitted with two fine and original ring loop handles above an impressive lion mask ornamentation. Each tureen is supported by four impressive shaped legs with paw feet. These sauce tureens are presented with fine and impressive associated chester made, antique sterling silver sauce ladles crafted in the Hanoverian rat tail pattern by Herbert Edward Barker & Frank Ernest Barker of Barker Brothers. These antique Georgian sauce tureens are exceptional provincial examples. This crest and motto pertains to the Glege or Gleke family.
