Glamorous Antique French "Apt" Faience Tureen & Under Plate Set-Signed

About the Item

Attributed to a very successful baker and pastry chef that later in life changed his medium to faience working within the acclaimed Apt region of France. Immediately recognized upon sight, this stunning faience offers a base color of soft and delicate ivory shades of winter white contrasting ever so distinctively with its intertwining swirls of contrasting color. The one thing in particular that sets this tureen set apart, is the fact that it possess delicate renderings of a floral relief.that are each so dainty, one wonders how they have so elegantly survived the test of time. Clays of the Apt region of France, are instantly distinguished by their aesthetic qualities and refractory’s thanks to the presence of kaolin,. They provide a lightly colored, pale pink or yellowish white paste. Analyses have shown that this mixed potter’s clay is feldspar. Mainly used for spare table and decorative objects, it should be fine and homogeneous with a regular grain. For this, the potter proceeded to washing and refining the earth produced clay. Washed and decanted, it then underwent the operation of "rotting" that eliminated for organic waste. Marbled pastes are always obtained by a mixture of different land tones which are blended together to obtain a homogeneous paste. To avoid a uniform mixture of colors on the surface, the potter makes veins reappear by scraping the surface with a hardened scraper..The transparent enamel adds luster colored veins. This technique creates the marbled effect, resulting in flame, Mixing colors of clay, flamed by hand, it gives the impression of rows of flames rising along the object . By sharpening his skill and know-how (calculation of dosages, sculpture, modeling), and to the remarkable plasticity of clay, the potter has been successful with pieces of rare beauty and elegance. His technique allows him to lighten a too dark earth, covering it with a thin layer of white slip before the first firing. If on the contrary, it is too bright, he colors it with oxide of manganese. The vast majority of wares are molded in Apt manually, which allows for many unique pieces. After the realization of the object and before the glazing and firing commences, drying must occur as the pulp still waterlogged. This process alone, can last from several days to several weeks. Apt earthenware pottery is distinguished from more common clear paste potteries, which are sometimes white and have fine grain. It is covered with a transparent enamel Pb, a glaze made of silica and lead oxide. Its decoration is only on the biscuit, after the first firing. The pieces are fired once fired smart, then they are enameled and annealed. Enamel is colored by different iron oxides (ocher) or leads to give the range of yellow, off-white to orange, to brown manganese and copper to green. **Signed inside lid (image 7) & bottom of plate (image 10).**
