About the Item

Fine quality late 19th century "straight stick" mahogany cane with a "sterling" silver mark at the base of the highly repoussed and chased collar; with a floral geometric design at the top and a makers mark of "oo" embossed on each side (see images). The heavy duty circular mahogany shaft measures 7/8"diameter just beneath the silver collar and tapers down to 5/8" diameter at the base. There is no evidence that a ferrel ever existed, as there is ample and smooth wear to the base, in addition to the comfortable length of 34 1/2" It should be noted that most 19th century walking sticks were used as fashion statements just as often as for orthopedic utility; selecting them with the same emphasis as if they were choosing a hat to wear. There was even an individual style and gait that users employed in carrying and walking with their canes. Dimensions" 34 1/2": long x 1" diameter with a 1" long collar Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations.
