Ancient Roman Heavy Bronze Quadrans Coin, 280 BC

About

Heavy bronze Quadrans, issued by the Rome mint, circa 280 BC. The front of the coin with symbols of agriculture; an open hand and sickle, the denomination denoted by three pellets. The back with three more pellets, two fat grains of barley either side. A large, impressive example of early Roman coinage. Weight 74.05 g. Measures: Diameter: 41.60 mm Provenance: From the collection of Monsieur B. Rizzo, Nîmes, France, acquired 1970s.
