Roman Double-Chambered Balsamarium

About the Item

A Roman double balsamarium made of translucent, bright blue-green glass. The vessel is composed of two tubular phials, rims folded inward and bulging slightly in the middle. Both phials have a delicate glass thread carefully wrapped around the length of the bodies. Two handles, applied in pads on the upper body, are drawn vertically upwards and pressed into the rims of the phials. The balsamarium is unusual in that it has an old museum number painted in red on the base; “7.29.65” and an early paper label affixed on the neck: “273”. Provenance: Ex. Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe, NJ., Dr. Arnold Saslow. Acquired in Munich, late 1970’s.
