Roman Three Handled Flared Rim Jar

About the Item

A Roman three-handled jar, blown from greenish-yellow glass. The handles and trail of the jar are rendered in a darker tint. The jar is rounded with a slightly inverted rim and wide flaring mouth tapering into the shoulder. It has a slightly pushed-in, horizontal shoulder and squat bulbous body that tapers carefully into a rounded foot with a concave base. There is a delicate trail applied on the underside of the mouth, wound around once horizontally and then down in a spiral six times, ending halfway down the neck. Three handles, applied in pads on the upper body are drawn vertically upwards, and two are looped in and all pressed into the neck on top of trail decoration.  Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou, CT. Acquired 1990’s. To family by descent. Ex. Royal Athena Gallery, NYC.
