18th Century Whieldon-Type Creamware Pottery Cow
About the Item
Rare 18th century Whieldon-type creamware pottery cow,
circa 1765.
The rare press-moulded cow stands on a flat slab base with lobed edges. The cow is sponged with a tortoise-shell glaze with her head lightly turned. The base is green to imitate grass.
Dimensions: 5 1/4 inches tall x 8 1/2 length x 3 inches.
Provenance: The Laver Collection of English Pottery (label).
Reference: The Henry H. Weldon Collection-English Pottery, Stoneware and Earthenware 1650-1800, page 356, # 210 for another figure from the same mould. Another figure of the same shape is in the Partridge Collection.
