Charming Pair of Austrian 19th Century Polychromed Majolica Wall Sculptures
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A fine and charming pair of Austrian 19th century polychromed majolica hanging wall sculptures of an elderly couple peeking through a window, probably by Friedrich Goldscheider (Goldscheider'sche Porzellan-Manufactur und Majolica-Fabrik.) Each wall sculpture depicting an elderly man wearing glasses and a traditional cap with his arms extended forward as if it was reading a book or a newspaper. The other depicting an elderly lady, also peeking through a window, wearing a laced cap with a bow tie and shawl over her shoulders, her arms are also extended forward as if it was reading a book or a newspaper. The male figure stamped on the back "78 - II ." The lady figure stamped on the back "37 - 79." Vienna, circa 1890-1900. Man's height: 16 1/2 inches (41.9 cm.) Man's width: 13 3/4 inches (34.9 cm.) Depth: 8 1/2 inches (21.6 cm.) Lady's height: 15 1/2 inches (39.4 cm.) Lady's width: 13 3/4 inches (34.9 cm.) Lady's depth: 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm.) Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory (German: Goldscheider'sche Porzellan-Manufactur und Majolica-Fabrik, (now) Goldscheider Keramik) is an Austrian ceramic manufactory. In 1885, Friedrich Goldscheider came from the small Bohemian city of Pilsen to Vienna and founded the Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory. It became one of the most influential ceramic manufactories of terracotta, faience and bronze objects in Austria with subsidiaries in Paris, Leipzig and Florence. For over half a century Goldscheider created masterpieces of historical revivalism, Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) and Art Deco. Famous artists such as Josef Lorenzl, Stefan Dakon, Ida Meisinger and the two perhaps best known Austrian ceramic artists Michael Powolny and Vally Wieselthier worked for Goldscheider. Several of the artists who worked for Goldscheider also worked for other Viennese studios, such as Augarten, Keramos or for the German brands Rosenthal and Meissen. The Goldscheider family emigrated in 1938 to United Kingdom and USA. Walter Goldscheider startet a new factory in Trenton, New Jersey and returned to Vienna in 1950. Marcel Goldscheider went to Stoke-on-Trent and produced figurative ceramics for Myott and opened his own studio in the 1950s in Hanley. Both brothers died in the early 1960s. More than 10,000 different models were created over a period of three generations. Since the very beginning many of these won first prizes and gold medals at innumerable world fairs, exhibitions and trade fairs. Goldscheider figures...

Grotesque Ceramic Plate Glazed Earthenware Hand Painted Italy Contemporary
By Francesco Raimondi
Located in London, GB
Francesco Raimondi, Grotesque plate, 2020 glazed earthenware 60cm diameter - hand painted, unique piece Francesco Raimondi was born in 1959 in Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi coast, where he currently lives and works. A decorative artist by vocation, from his adolescence he trained at the major ceramic’s factories in the area. Raimondi represents one of the most significant contemporary expression of Southern Italy Majolica tradition: he is an exquisite decorator transferring traditional propitiatory grotesque themes into a contemporary fresh and innovative interpretation. From the late 1990s Francesco Raimondi has taken part in numerous exhibitions at regional, national, and international level. His solo shows include “Contemporary Mediterranean” at Palazzo Sant’Agostino and at the Temple of Pomona in Salerno and “Raimondesche” a large retrospective of his work hosted at MIC - Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza, the museum with the largest ceramics collection in the world. In 2006, part of the Regione Campania pavilion, Raimondi won the Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in London, awarded by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2016 he was assigned the title “Master of Arts and Crafts” by the Cologni Foundation at Milan Triennale and was included in the Golden Book of Italy’s Crafts Excellence. In 2018 he was granted the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy...

Large Creamware Racing Horse Leeds Pottery Made England Circa 1840
Located in Katonah, NY
I have always wanted one of these. I'm thrilled to have found it. This Leeds Pottery stallion has a wonderful face with beautiful eyes. Large creamware enamel-painted horses are rare. Leeds made the largest of the creamware horses. Our horse is 16.75 inches tall x 14.75" long. A similar example can be seen in Leeds Museums and Art Galleries (Temple Newsam House) and was featured in an exhibition during an exhibition that ran from June 1- October 30, 2005, in "The Leeds Pottery 1770 1881". Condition: Excellent with light craquelure in the glaze Price: $9,600 Our horse is cream-colored with an orange harness and a full bushy brown tail. The figure is finely modeled: he stands proudly with his head slightly turned to the right, wearing a halter, the lead line laid across his back. His tail was neatly applied, swinging onto one hind leg. The top of the base is a mottled green within a molded stiff-leaf border glazed in manganese. On his belly and underneath the bottom are two unglazed patches where the model was held up during the firing process. Dealers in equestrian feed, medicine, and tack used large pottery horses in their display windows, like those seen here, to draw in customers. Examples can be found in the Leeds City Museum, the Yorkshire Museum, and the Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum. The original Leeds Pottery factory closed around 1849-50. These prominent figures of horses were made for window displays in saddlers and tack stores, for dealers trading in horse equipment...
