African Chokwe Wood Hand Carved Folk Art Initiation Ceremony Ancestral Mask
About the Item
A very engaging mask by the Chowke (Tchokwe) tribe of Southern and Central Africa who today reside primarily in Angola.
This mask is intricately carved and is recognizable by the use of facial tattoos and scarification - a staple in the Chokwe aesthetic. Chokwe masks are often worn during celebrations that mark the completion of male initiation into adulthood and marked the dissolution of the bonds of intimacy between mothers and their sons. They were also worn to pay homage to male ancestors believed to be responsible for the prosperity, strength, and continued well-being of the Community
This particular mask is from the collection of anthropologist and author Dr. Peter T. Furst.
We are listing it as 19th century but could be older.
The mask has a beautiful aged dark brown patina acquired from age. Would be a great addition to any African or folk art mask collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
