About the Item

A beautiful, wonderfully crafted, alluring mask made for Japanese Noh theatre. The mask is handcrafted and hand-carved from natural wood and is signed by the maker, clearly a master of his trade, on the verso. This mask is of the Noh theatre character Chujo who portrays a handsome young Heian-period poet and elegant, graceful nobleman or aristocratic warrior of the Heike clan who dies bravely on the battlefield. The painted high eyebrows and blackened teeth, which are peculiar to and often seen in female masks, suggest that he is a high-ranking aristocrat, however, the furrow on his forehead expresses grief. Likely from the early to mid-Showa period, but perhaps older. A rare and somewhat hard-to-find mask. Finely carved and executed. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian art/artifacts collection or an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Mask dimensions: 8.5" high, 5" wide, 3" deep.

A beautiful, wonderfully crafted, alluring mask made for Japanese Noh theatre. This mask is handcrafted and carved from natural wood. Ko-omote translates as "little mask" or sometimes "small face." This particular delicate featured mask (her red lips really stand out) is used for main and sometimes secondary roles when the character is a young girl or, in some cases, a supernatural being. What is also interesting about this mask is the blackened teeth which centuries ago, was customary for Japanese women to paint their teeth black after they became married. We believe this mask dates from the mid-to early Showa period, perhaps Mejia. The mask was acquired from an antique mask...
