Japanese Signed Showa Hand Carved Wood Noh Theater Mask of Buddhist Monk Shunkan
About the Item
A beautifully carved, wonderfully crafted, highly engaging mask made for Japanese Noh theatre.
The mask is handcrafted and hand carved from natural wood and is signed and sealed by the maker, clearly a master of his Craft, on the verso.
This mask is quite rare and hard to find. It is of the Noh theatre character Shunkan - a Buddhist monk from the play "Shunkan" a story about a Buddhist priest Shunkan (1143-1179) written in the Tale of the Heike. Shunkan, a priest of the Shingon sect, and two aristocrats, Fujiwara no Naritsune and Taira no Yasuyori were exiled to “Devil’s Island (Kikaigashima)” off the coast of Satsuma province, as punishment for a plot against the ruling Taira clan. Fujiwara no Naritsune and Taira no Yasuyori were pardoned and granted amnesty later because they made 1,000 wooden stupas and floated them into the sea, one of which drifted to the shore of Itsukushima Island in Aki province and attracted the attention of Taira no Kiyomori. Shunkan, however, was accused of being the mastermind of the plot and refused to seek forgiveness. As a result, he was exiled permanently to spend his remaining days alone on the island. Consequently, Shunkan was deeply depressed and saddened and determined to fast to death. Zeami was moved by this tragedy and wrote the play “Shunkan.” The Shunkan mask expresses great woe and despair.
This mask is likely from the early to mid-Showa period, but perhaps older.
Again, a rare and somewhat hard-to-find mask. Finely carved and executed. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian mask/art/artifacts collection or an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.

- Japanese Okame Ko-Omote Wood Carved Noh Theater MaskLocated in Studio City, CAA beautiful, wonderfully crafted, alluring mask made for Japanese Noh theatre. This particular delicate featured mask (her red lips really stand out) is used for main and sometimes secondary roles when the character is a young girl or, in some cases, a supernatural being. What is also interesting about this mask is the blackened teeth which centuries ago, was customary for Japanese women to paint their teeth black after they became married. We believe this mask dates from the mid-to early Showa period, perhaps Mejia. The mask was acquired from an antique mask...Category
