A Pende Mbangu "Sickness" Mask
About the Item
Representing a hunter stricken by disease and sickness as a result of witchcraft or sorcery, this mask is meant as a morality lesson.
The mask is divided by both color and carving. The white side represents the hope of the spirit world, which can cure sickness. On this side, the mask appears to smile, and little is seen of any deformity. The black side represents sickness and sorcery. The face droops under the weight of a grotesquely misshapen nose that all but obscures the mouth.
