Swallowed Tailed, Suffragette Pennant in Black and Orange, circa 1912-1920
About the Item
Large, swallow tailed, suffragette pennant in a black & orange color combination unique to this example, with applied lettering that reads "Votes for Women” down a wide, central stripe, circa 1912-1920.
Large, felt, Suffragette pennant with a tapered, swallowtail format. Black in color, with a orange binding and black ties, there is a wide orange stripe down the center, upon which applied, black, felt letters read simply: "Votes for Women."
This wonderful pennant is known in two basic color variants. The most common of these has yellow letters on horizontal panels of yellow-black-yellow. Far more scarce is the mirror image opposite of that, in black letters on panels of black-yellow-black. This is a variation on the latter, with orange instead of yellow, and is the only example that I have ever seen in this peculiar combination. Unique to this textile, across all manner of related, cloth, suffrage objects—not just pennants—it may be that there was not enough golden yellow felt to complete a particularly large order, so orange was substituted instead.
Golden yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles. Purple and green were the traditional colors of the movement in England, though these sometimes appear in the States, as they were adopted by one of the leading Suffrage organizations in the northeast, the Women’s Political Union of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
A yellow and black example of this pennant is documented in "The Keynoter: Journal of the American Political Items Conservators," Summer/Fall/Winter 2008 (Women's Suffrage Special Triple Issue), Volume 2008, Number 2-4, p.37. Yellow Suffrage pennants were often produced in two variants, with the colors simply reversed. One in the mirror image style is documented in the same reference on p. 129.
Mounting: The pennant has been hand-stitched to 100% hemp fabric. The mount was placed in a square, black-painted, wooden molding, to which a black molding with gold scrollwork was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective plexiglass.
Condition: Excellent, with only a tiny stain under the letter “0”.

ENTIRELY HAND-SEWN, 32-FOOT, SHIP’S COMMISSION PENNANT OF THE 1845-1865 ERA, A HOMEMADE, COTTON EXAMPLE, WITH 13 STARS ON A CORNFLOWER BLUE CANTON, IN A BEAUTIFUL STATE OF PRESERVATION
Commission pennants are the distinguishing mark of a commissioned U.S. Navy ship. A ship becomes commissioned when the pennant is hoisted. Flown during both times of peace and war, the only time it is not flown is if a flag officer or civilian official is aboard and replaces it with their own flag. Flown at the topmast, this would be the first thing one would see coming over the horizon and identified the vessel as a warship.
Sometimes the owners of private ships mimicked the use of Navy signals. Some seafaring men would have served in the Navy and become privy to various practices in that capacity. Others flew them purely for stylistic reasons, either on a regular basis or while the boat was dressed for special occasion. Hudson River steamers regularly flew pennants of this nature, as evidenced by period photography as well as the paintings of artists such as John and James Bard...
