Antique Native American Hopi Kachina Doll 'HeHeya Clown', Early 20th Century
About the Item
This antique Hopi HeHeya Clown Kachina doll, created in the first quarter of the 20th century, is a beautifully crafted representation of a traditional Hopi spiritual figure. Made of wood and painted with vibrant pigments, the doll measures 11 ½ inches in height, 3 ½ inches in width, and 3 ¾ inches in depth. The HeHeya Clown is depicted carrying a watermelon and a backpack, reflecting the playful and enigmatic nature of this Kachina.
The HeHeya Katsina, also known as HeHeya Clown, is a unique and significant figure in Hopi culture. While HeHeya has no direct English translation, this Kachina is most commonly seen on Third Mesa. HeHeya serves as a messenger to the rain gods and plays an important role in Hopi ceremonial dances, including the Powamuya. Known for speaking in opposites, HeHeya will counteract the positive by saying the opposite — for example, if the dance is good, HeHeya will call it bad. As a relative of the Ogre family, HeHeya is both a comedic and protective presence, dancing on the fringes of the procession and safeguarding the other dancers.
This Kachina doll is a rare and valuable piece, reflecting the deep cultural and spiritual traditions of the Hopi people. It would make a stunning addition to any collection of Native American art or Kachina dolls.

A wonderfully handcrafted/detailed and decorated Native American Hopi Mudhead Kachina doll. Quite an unusually large work. A striking piece overall. Hand painted with leather and possibly turquoise (necklace) accompaniment.
Hopi katsina figures, also known as kachina dolls, are figures carved, typically from cottonwood root by the Hopi people. Initially, kachina dolls were made to instruct young girls and new brides about katsinas or katsinam, the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world and society, and act as messengers between humans and the spirit world. The Mudhead or Koyemsi figure is viewed as a clown/joker figure who is responsible for laughter and entertainment at Hopi dances and ceremonial events. He plays drums and games to keep his audience engaged.
The piece is signed by the artist under the base.
