About the Item

This is a unique and original beautifully hand-incised hand painted settle or bench signed and dated 1905. This unique work of art is hand-incised using a pyrographic (pyrography) wood burned technique and then hand stained/painted on front with images of four children, tulips, pretzels, a windmill and even a stein- a family celebration! Original fleur-de-lis brass hinges complete this substantial work of art. Inside under the drop seat is signed: "Genieve Annette Silliman, 1905 Wow!" Dimensions: 48 inches high and 48.5 inches wide and 20 inches deep Hand painted and hand burned using pyrographic techniques Provenance: Old Pennsylvania collection. History of the Pyrography: py·rog·ra·phy is the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. Pyrography was particular popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century. In rare instances, the pyrography decorative technique was combined with hand painting using stains and oils and producing largely unique works of art like this bench.
