Early Still Life Trompe L'oeil Painting

About the Item

Trompe l'oeil oil on board painting. Trick of the eye still life of a hand towel, a folding ruler, envelope and an almanac dated 1831. Most likely, the mundane everyday items used in this work of art are representations of the pursuit of labor, education, reading, math and science. The skill and artistry of visually fooling the viewer comes to us in the time honored tradition of the great Early American troupe l'oeil painter, Charles Willson Peale. A true jewel that probably dates the work to the Mid-19th Century from the Upstate New York or New England. Unsigned. The board's measurements are approximately 24.5" wide x 31.5" high. The board depth is approximately .13". Good overall restored condition. The work has been professionally and lightly cleaned and varnished. There was a split down the middle and older wood cleats were added for strength. Wear to edges and corners (see photos).

Mid Century Modern Still Life with Jug and Vase by Ramon Prats (1928-2003)
By Giorgio Morandi, Ramon Prats
Located in Garnerville, NY
Ramon Prats (1928-2003) vase and jug still life oil paint on masonite. Circa 1971. Signed and dated lower right, Prats, '71. A peaceful rendering and reminiscent of Morandi's solitary still life paintings. Prats' stippling effect with the brush or palette knife has created a beautifully tactile and textured painting. Light and dark contrast of the violet cylinder next to the curvaceous jug. A wonderful piece. the framing treatment consists of a simple flat black wood profile molding. The piece is in good overall condition with minor losses around the corners and edges of the work. No other major paint losses. No visible crazing, water damage or restorations. Some scuffs, dings and losses to the black frame. Wear consistent with age. Approximate overall dimensions with frame are 1.5" deep x 16" wide x 24.75" high. The approximate measurements of the actual work on masonite are 15.63" wide x 24.25" high.
