Antique Limoges Enamel Portrait of Woman and Lap Dog
Located in London, GB
The beautiful enamel plaque was crafted in Limoges, a town in northern France. Limoges has long been associated with the production of high quality enamel wares. While to begin with, in the 12th Century, the town was famous for its applied enamel pieces, religious icons, for example, which were crafted in metal with champlevé enamel ornament, Limoges later, in the 15th century, began to paint onto enamel, creating plaques, plates and ewers, which were both religious and secular in character. These local techniques were revived in the mid-19th century, when items like this enamel portrait painting were produced. This enamel portrait is a half-length depiction of a young woman. While her body is faced slightly to the side, she turns her head to look out directly at the viewer. The woman wears a fine, light pink gown...

English Late 19th Century Vertical Oil Painting of a Dog Sitting in an Armchair
Located in Atlanta, GA
An English late 19th century oil painting of a dog sitting in an armchair with red cushion in giltwood frame. This exquisite animal painting features a short hair caramel colored dog, majestically sitting in a chair, in a manner reminiscent of Velasquez' depiction of Pope Innocent X. A red cushion, whose deep tones contrast beautifully with the dog's coat, assures us that the dog is very comfortable! Dog portraits became popular during the 18th century among the hunting aristocracy, and the establishment of The Kennel Club in 1873, further encouraged their popularity. This portrait is a perfect example of this trend. Set inside a lovely giltwood frame, this vertical format English dog portrait...

English 19th century portrait of two seated King Charles Cavalier Spaniels dogs
By James Cassie
Located in Woodbury, CT
James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician. This piece is framed in its original frame and the painting is signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse. From the inscription on the reverse, this painting was purchased from an important house sale...
