African Ethiopian Tribal Folk Art Painting 20th Century
Located in Milan, IT
Ancient Ethiopian painting imported to Italy by a diplomat during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia, in the late 1930s. This genre scene painting is divided into eighteen squares bordered by a black frame and divided into three lines. The scene depicts the story of a couple with three children through the stories of their domestic life and their rural activity; each box has a caption written in the Amharic language. In the first line: they grind; they drink; …illegible… while they spin; they bring water. In the second line: comb, cut your hair; treats your teeth; grind; they bring the wood; they bring water. In the third section: they prepare beer; they prepare bread; they cook bread; they prepare lunch; while they eat; while they drink. This canvas is painted in shades of ocher and is mounteed on a ebonized frame. Dates back to the late 1930s. The canvas show minimal tears and signs of wear but we can customize a restoration. The human figures are characterized by unrealistic proportions of the head and body and depicted in static positions. This sense of fixity and the narration in successive chapters in domestic environments make the paintings easily intelligible and suggestive. A particularly fascinating aspect of Ethiopian art...

"Beau" Mixed Media Art Wall Piece by V. L. Cox
Located in Wiscasset, ME
Signed by Governor of Arkansas Mike Beebe, hung in the Governor’s Mansion for six years. V.L. Cox was born in Shreveport Louisiana on August 14, 1962 and later moved to Arkadelphia, Arkansas. She acquired a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Henderson State University in 1991. Cox comes from a long line of artists. Her father is an illustrator and engineer, and her great grandmother Louise Betts Pilkinton from Old Washington, Arkansas, was a painter who graduated in 1909 from Lindenwood College for Women in St. Charles, Mo. with a degree in fine art. Her work is now in the permanent collection of the Historic Arkansas Museum. Interesting enough, the museum acquired a piece of Cox's as well for their collection. Two generations of artists from the same family born over 74 years apart. Cox's work sets in motion an unrivaled interplay of textures, forms and colors, which depict strong emotions. Her creations are powerful, imaginative and unprecedented in style. Her representational art tells a story. Each piece conveys a message or incites a memory of days gone by. Cox is committed to art and the discovery of new and exciting ideas and techniques. She has a keen and sensitive eye for three-dimensional detail and it's impact on all aspects of design and composition in a work of art. In the eyes of the observers, Cox's paintings combine composition and depth, which are powerful but calming to compel the viewer to interact with the artwork. Cox understands how to draw the viewer into her work through her experience with working with large audiences. While working as an artist in Dallas, Texas, Cox worked in the scenic industry constructing and painting large backdrops for theatrical organizations such as the Dallas Opera, the Dallas Ballet, and the Los Colinas Film Studios. Some of the productions include: The Nutcracker and Phantom of the Opera. The backdrops she created measured 40 feet by 60 feet long. Cox's experience with scenic design has inspired her to work on large-scale paintings for corporations and private collectors. One of her most important achievements was painting the background for the National Civil Rights Humanities Awards in Memphis, Tennessee where Leah Rabin, wife of slain Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, spoke and presented the award for freedom. While living in Memphis, Tennessee, Cox's artwork was heavily influenced by the people and surroundings. It was there that she developed a growing interest in historical preservation and a southern way of life. In 1999, Cox was selected for the 1999 International Women's Works Competition in Chicago, Illinois. Her entry was an early painting from her American South Series depicting people and southern life in the past and present. Cox currently resides in North Little Rock, Arkansas and has been painting for 26 years. She works as a full time-artist and her work can be found in international private and corporate collections. Her progress in the art world has been rapid. EDUCATION 1988 - 1991 BFA, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, AR 1985 - 1986 Engineering, Arkansas Tech University, Russellville, AR AWARDS AND HONORS 2011 - Nominated for the Governor's Art Award, Little Rock, AR 2010 - Acquisition - President William Jefferson Clinton Collection, New York, NY 2009 - "Art Across Arkansas" - THEA Foundation and The Clinton Presidential Library. 2009 - "Beau" - On Loan at the Governor's Mansion, Little Rock, AR 2008 - U.
