About

"Mosaic Hexagons" with "sawtooth" border. Pieced quilt, mid-19th century, American. Fancy period calicoes left over from fancy clothing and decorating fabrics are pieced in hexagon shapes to form this large, elegant, bedcover. The elaborately quilted white ground emphasizes the graceful details of this patchwork, framed with blue patchwork hexagonal circles and blue "sawtooth" edges. 20th century quilters drew from this design to create the ubiquitous "Grandmother's Flower Garden" pattern, a wildly popular variation usually done in pastel cotton candy prints. Finely stitched quilting includes the "waffle" and "parallel line" patterns.
