19th Century encased paper model of an Indian grocery store

About the Item

19th Century encased paper model of an Indian grocery store Quite simple this is an amazing decorative object, encased in a 19th century glass and pine display, a handmade paper model of an Indian grocery shop, with wooden hand painted elephant and working man at the steps. Spencer and Co of Madras became one of the largest department stores in India, after becoming a Limited company in 1897. This model would likely have been commissioned to take pride of place in one of their department stores or the head office. The weathered and aged effect which has taken place over the years is what makes this model so amazing, it now resembles a ruined, abandoned architectural relic of days gone by with a haunting presence. Size: H 11” x W 18” x D 11” Completely solid in structure and form, this is a super fragile model, being made from paper and being encased in this diorama display has meant the aging process has corroded the paper and even developed humid dampness which has led to green mould developing. This adds to the effect of this haunting object however makes it super fragile. with natural wear and patination across all surfaces due to age and use. An original example so please expect imperfections as suggested and shown in the photos provided. We have tried to show all its flaws in the photos. For multiple years we have sold antique items globally, please expect our items to show relevant age and natural wear, Items are only restored due to breaks and major loss, and we always stipulate this in our condition report.

  • Orientalist Turkomania Wood Sculpture of an Ottoman, Early 19th Century
    Located in Amsterdam, NL
A carved and painted wood 'TURKOMANIA' sculpture of an ottoman soldier French or Dutch Turkomania, early 19th century Depicted in standing position, with a sword in one hand and a club in the raised other, with a fur hat, long moustache and long coat, on a square base. Measures: H. 58 cm Note: During the Dutch War of Independence from 1568 till 1648, the Dutch and Turks were allies against Roman Catholic Spain and the slogan of the Dutch was “liever Turks dan Paaps” (rather Muslim than Roman Catholic). In 1612 the first Dutch ambassador arrived in Istanbul. Nevertheless, in Holland, there was also the image of the cruel and heretic Turk stemming from the frequent violent clashes between Dutch ships and the pirates from Algiers, usually called the “Turkish pirates”. When the Ottoman armies advanced against Vienna, in the eyes of many Europeans the Islam bent on destroying Christianity. Later in the early 19th century, although the Turkish threat to Europe was long gone, the image of the Turks deteriorated again because of the Greek uprising. The Sultan Mahmud II understood that Turkey had to modernize along West European lines and among other things in 1808 he replaced the “picturesque” oriental clothing...
