About the Item

A wonderful and quite engaging hand carved wood with hand painted ochres on a hollow wooden log coffin with skull and bone designs. This piece is from the famed Kelton Collection of important Australian Indigenous Works of Art and is attributed to Australian Aboriginal artist George Garawun (1945-1993) whose works are held in many prominent collections and museums including The National Gallery of Australia, The National Gallery of Victoria and The Art Gallery of South Australia. Provenance: Collector's Gallery of Aboriginal Art & Crafts Pty. Ltd., Sydney, NSW, cat. no. RA34 Roi; acquired in 1979; Richard Kelton Collection, Santa Monica Collectors' GalleryOrange County Exhibit #6 Truly a striking and original work.
