"In my work, I´ve tried to understand my past at a family, state, and country level. I take all this information, and then try to translate it into the piece to tell a story for people in the future. I compare it to the people who lived here in Monte Alban in the past, the ones who made beautiful vases and different types of ceramics. Today we learn about the past through their artisan work and their “codices.” They translated everyday life into their art. I always think of my art as a time capsule so that one day it can similarly serve as an explanation of the past." - Master Woodcarver Agustin Cruz Prudencio The indigenous Mixes, from the state of Oaxaca, were one of the few civilizations that were not conquered by the Spaniards during The Conquest. Legend says that the Condoy King, considered a God to Mixes, protected them during this time, who is represented on top of the piece with a spear. What would history look like if you controlled the moves of the Spanish and indigenous Mixes 500 years ago? Agustin’s playful tone with this chess set gives you the opportunity to “change history” on a board illuminated with brilliant colors. -Materials & Technique- Used by the mystic cultures of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and gathered from the Southern Mountain Range of Oaxaca, local farmers bring the aromatic copal wood to the Cruz family workshop for its use in artisan wood carving. Considered sacred by the Zapotecs, copal takes only five years to grow, and its easy reforestation makes this art form environmentally sustainable. Master artisan husband and wife team, Agustin Jr. and Carmen Cruz, work for 2 months to complete this breathtaking piece. Within the team, Agustin gives movement and expression to the wood, first by using the machete for the main parts and then smaller knives for the Fine touches, and ends by sanding and polishing the final details. Carmen then takes over and lets her imagination flow, painting the piece with bright colors and transforming it into a jewel for the eye to see. Origin Made in Oaxaca, Mexico.
