About the Item

This old model Salish pole dates to around 1900 and was sold out of the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Co. in Seattle, WA. The pole depicts an inverted killer whale, although the identities of the other figures are unclear. There is a formline human face in profile carved in relief and painted on the front of the base. A rather unusual feature of this pole is the inlaid glass beads in the eyes of the figures and blowhole of the whale. Early model poles sometimes incorporated new, non-traditional materials into their work. A highly unusual and early pole. Northwest Coast cedar totem with original Hudson Bay sticker. Patinated with cabin smoke. 15" PERIOD: Circa 1900 ORIGIN: Northwest Coast SIZE: 15" Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West. Ditidaht/Nuu-Chah-Nulth Totem By Raymond Williams
Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
Chief Shakes Raven pole by Ditidaht/Nuu-chah-nulth artist Raymond Williams. This finely crafted model totem pole is by Ditidaht/Nuu-chah-nulth master carver Raymond Williams, the father of the current generation of Williams carvers. It depicts an iteration of the Tlingit Chief Shakes pole of Wrangell, Alaska – a popular motif for the Williams family. The top figure is Raven’s Grandfather, who perched on the Box of Daylight. The middle figure is Raven, and below is frog. This model illustrates how Raven stole the sun, moon, and stars and released them into the world. This pole was probably made for Ye Olde Curiosity Shop in the 1950s. 27" PERIOD: 1950s ORIGIN: Seattle/Williams Family SIZE: 27"H Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West. A very large 19th century North-Western Indian figural Carved Wood Totem Pole. This very rare Pole measures 8" in diameter and stands 7.5 feet tall. This is one of the rare historic Totem pole that survived the late 19th century ban of Totem poles. Nearly all Totem-pole-making had ceased by 1901. Carving of monumental and mortuary poles continued in some, more remote villages as late as 1905; however, as the original sites were abandoned, the poles and timber homes were left to decay and vandalism. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, before the passage of the American Indian Religious...
